Empowerment in the Practice of Community Health Practitioners(CHPs)

Abstract
This study was conducted as a case study to clarify the characteristics of empowerment and to explore the practice were implemented by empowered CHPs in their practice.
Research participants were seven CHPs working in Kwangju and Chonnam area. The data were collected through in-depth interview and participant observation with tape recording and transcribing by researcher from June 1997 to March 1998.
The data were analyzed during the fieldwork, adopting the recording system suggested by Schatzman and Strauss(1973).
The results are summarized asfollows :
From this study, the nature of empowerment was clarified sequencial and circural process included five stages: recognition of reality, initiation of change, confirmation of outcome, changing in affective, and intention of accomplishment. During this process, the CHPs were committed with responsibility, obligation, ought to be and mission as a CHP. And they had confirmed their outcomes, they increased their self-efficacy, self-esteem and motivated for themselves affectively. And then they were committed to their work enthusiastically with interest and attempted new activities with another expectation for more accomplishment. The empowerd CHPs through this process had increased self control and job satisfaction to their job.
During this empowering process, the CHPs had tried to get more knowledge and information to improve their abilities that were needed to treatment of ill-clients and admistrative duties. And they developed the network with health resources in their community. In relationship between the CHPs and people, the CHPs had more involved in community development program, such as organizing a village health worker or steering committee for CH Post
composed by community housewives and leaders. In addition to the burget of their posts were reallocated to welfare services for children and elderly. Through these activities, the CHPs were recognized as a unique professional and an important leader of the communities by the health officials and community people.
In conclusion, the empowerment in the CHPs¢¥ practice experience is a becoming process toward their goals. In order to empower CHPs, concrete strategies for CHPs¢¥ practice should be developed using these research results. Also, further researches which are focused on empowerment of community people are required.
